Why

Why we are doing this, step by step.

Each step says what kind of statement it is and what would refute it. Some are facts; others are interpretations, decisions or bets. One is still open: why we exist.

What is still open.

From the strategy to the sensors. The reasoning in twelve steps

Fact
On record and checkable.
Interpretation
A reading of the facts; another reading is possible.
Decision
Taken, with an owner and a record.
Bet
What we expect to happen; it can fail.
Open question
What we do not know yet.
Method
How we work on the reasoning.
  1. Fact

    We started by measuring.

The AKRIBIS company was constituted in 2003. The AKRIBIS unit, dedicated to measuring instruments and equipment for industry, appears in our records as the unit the company grew from. The records of those beginnings are few and do not always agree: we still need to reconstruct them from sources.

    What would refute it

A primary record placing the company's origin in another unit or on another date.

  2. Fact

We grew by specialising, and became digital.

Eight more specialisations joined: laboratory equipment, cold preservation, metrology, pharmaceutical engineering, regulatory affairs, automation, software and data, and remote monitoring. Along the way we built our own software, our own monitoring platform and our own calibration systems, and today we work with artificial intelligence every day.

    What would refute it

None: reconstructing how each unit joined would complete this step, not refute it.

  3. Interpretation

Doing became cheap. Deciding what to do did not.

With artificial intelligence we can do much more, faster and better. But when doing becomes cheap, the hard part becomes defining what to do and how: why we exist, what we want to achieve, where we compete, how we work and how we know it is working. Without that definition, technology only accelerates what we were already doing.

    What would refute it

Deciding what to do turning out as cheap as doing it, or technology correcting the course on its own.

  4. Interpretation

    We grew piece by piece.

Each specialisation brought its own systems, each good at its job. The challenge now is to make them work as a whole. And we learned that connecting systems is not enough unless we first define the company we want to be.

    What would refute it

A review showing the systems with clear owners and integrated records.

  5. Interpretation

Our customers have the same problem.

A regulated plant has to prove that its instruments and processes stayed in a valid state all the time. Today that proof is rebuilt by hand, from documents supplied by many providers, and nobody answers for the whole. Inside and outside, the same shape: the pieces exist; the coherence does not.

    What would refute it

Evidence that customers value each piece separately and do not suffer from rebuilding the proof.

  6. Bet

What we do, multiplied by systems and software.

An instrument becomes an asset with a digital identity and a lifecycle. Calibration becomes continuous intelligence about every asset. Monitoring becomes live information about the operation. Automation becomes the layer through which action is taken. Validation and regulatory work become connected compliance. And AKRIBIS One becomes not only an offer but an operating environment.

    What would refute it

Customers not valuing continuity and still preferring separate services.

  7. Interpretation

Without calling it that, we were building one system.

Each unit works on a different layer of the same chain, from the instrument to the decision. What is missing is the top layer, the one that connects them: strategy and management.

    What would refute it

A unit whose work fits no link, or a chain that works without the top layer.

  8. Bet

From the strategy to the sensors.

We want a single chain, traceable in both directions. Intent flows down, from purpose to an action in a plant. Evidence flows up, from a calibrated sensor to the objective it affects. With it, a customer's operation can be represented at three levels, physical, operational and managerial, and we can add value no isolated specialist can.

    What would refute it

A pilot in which joining the links adds nothing each specialist could not give on its own.

  9. Decision

That is why we are building a strategy and management system.

It organises strategy as seven linked questions, from why we exist to how we learn. A core understands the company, connects the systems that already exist without replacing them, and coordinates people and tools, with important decisions always in human hands. The management system first, the software after. AKRIBIS is the first organisation to use it.

    What would refute it

    A recorded decision changing direction.

  10. Bet

And then: businesses that execute a system.

What we solve for ourselves can serve our customers, who would manage their operation from strategy down to the calibrated instrument. And it can give rise to new businesses, designed from the start as a working system: strategy written, operations configured, sensors connected.

    What would refute it

What works at AKRIBIS not improving measurable results, or not serving another organisation.

  11. Open question

    Why we exist remains open.

We have clues: we started by measuring, grew towards everything needed to trust what is measured, and decided to integrate it. There are formulations under discussion, none approved. We will not invent our purpose: we will look for it and test it with this same system.

    What would refute it

It closes only with an explicit decision and its reasons.

  12. Method

How to walk through this reasoning again.

Each step has its sources and what would refute it. If the facts change, the reasoning changes with them, and the reason is recorded.

One chain, traceable both ways. Each unit already works on one link.

What is missing is at the top: the strategy and management that connect the links to what they are for. That is what we are building.

What is still open. And what would close it.

  1. Open question

    What does AKRIBIS exist for?

There are clues and formulations under discussion, none approved.

    What would close it

An explicit decision, with its reasons, tested with this same system.

  2. Open question

Is going from strategy to sensors right?

It is the direction we chose. We have yet to say as clearly what we would not do.

    What would close it

A pilot showing value no single specialist can give, and a list of what we leave out.

  3. Open question

Which pilot shows the whole chain, in miniature?

There are two candidates: from a complaint to its corrective action, or a customer's instruments kept in a valid state.

    What would close it

The choice of pilot and its success criteria, recorded as a decision.

  4. Open question

Do the seven layers stand up to the evidence?

We use them to order the work, but we do not protect them: the research may change them.

    What would close it

A review of prior work and the test at AKRIBIS.

How we work. With sources, with limits, in the open.

Every statement says whether it is a fact, an interpretation or a hypothesis. Every figure has its record. What we do not know is written as a question, and every change is recorded with its reasons. This site shows the public part: internal figures and customer data stay out.

  1. A question

  2. Place it on the frame

  3. Find sources

  4. Record what was observed and its limits

  5. Form a testable hypothesis

  6. Propose a decision to whoever has the authority

  7. Make a bounded change and verify it

  8. Revise the reasoning and, if needed, the frame
